Overview
Let us suppose we come across three different people. They have three different kinds of illnesses. The doctors handling the cases are also different but the reason behind those illnesses is quite simple.
As per doctors’ opinion, those patients used to skip their breakfasts. It seems surprising and illogical yet it is a fact. If we keep on skipping our early morning meals for a long time there is quite a higher chance for us to be sick.
Now we share another example of the drawback of not eating
breakfast as our first meal in the morning.
A person is overweight and is on verge of becoming sick (having a phobia of eating something that can make him/ her obese.) That person is
trying the best to put the weight off and the first idea that comes to mind is skipping meals, in particular, breakfast.
He starts skipping breakfast. He wonders why can’t he
lose weight rather he is gaining weight on regular basis.
Yes. You have read right, skipping your first meal can slow down your metabolism. A slow metabolism can make you gain weight instead of losing it.
There are plenty of examples that can throw light on the
disadvantages of not having breakfast. Among those disadvantages, we would try to discuss a
few.

Disadvantages of skipping breakfast
The list of problems caused by having no or improper first meal is as follows,
- Higher risks of diabetes
- Higher chances of cardiovascular disease
- Brain cells dysfunction
- Weight gain and obesity
- Higher chances of cancer
- Decreased rate of metabolism
- Chronic headaches
- Alopecia
- Increased hangover
Higher risks of diabetes
A detailed study was conducted at Harward university school of public health for research purposes. In that study, thousands of women were kept under observation to check the effect of skipping breakfast. This study continued for about six years. The results were astonishing.
It was reported that among 46, 289 ladies, many were at
higher risk of developing diabetes type 2.
They had a bad habit of skipping breakfast due to their busy
schedules and were shifted towards a pre-diabetic state.

Higher chances of cardiovascular diseases
People who don’t take seriously the importance of having a proper breakfast in the morning are more likely to be heart patients. Their hearts become susceptible to get strokes.
As per studies, breakfast skippers have a 27 percent higher chance of getting a heart attack. Those who are regular at having meals tend to have healthy hearts and overall good condition.
Hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular illnesses
and it is somehow related to clogged arteries.
Every one of us knows the significance of a clogged artery.
This is quite preventable if you take care of your heart and predisposing factors. However, once your arteries are blocked, a cardiologist would be of no help. He would just put you on dozens of tablets with a set of side effects to other organs.
Brain cells dysfunction
Our brain controls us and once we fail to make it healthy, unfortunately, we would end up being in unwanted conditions.
Skipping breakfast inserts a lot of negative effects on brain
cells which are called neurons.
Those long-acting side effects are as follows
- ·
Lower efficacy at work
- · Cognitive dysfunction and memory problems
- · Poor social skills

This is what a perfect breakfast looks like! |
Lower efficacy at work
The main reason for the brain to slow down due to skipping meals, especially breakfast is low sugar levels. When glucose units are insufficient to reach the brain, neurons start slowing down. It leads to brain fog and ultimately the poor efficacy of the brain.
Brain fog doesn’t let
us work properly. We lose our command of work resulting in poor efficacy at
work. This can be serious and able to kick us out of the competition.
Cognitive dysfunction and memory problems
A study was conducted to analyze the importance of breakfast for cognitive behavioral development.
Three study groups were made. The one group which went under observation with no breakfast performed poorly in a visual examination. People in that group were unable to detect the details in a visual examination.
Skipping breakfast means starving your body for more than 12
hours which can negatively affect your whole body including the brain.
Poor social skills
Avoiding breakfast and depriving ourselves of essential nutrients and vitamins makes us sick. It also puts us in bad mood and induces anxiety and depressive episodes. It also affects our public dealing skills. We become socially alone.
People with poor diet routines always complain about fatigue
and inactivity. These episodes of poor mood and low energy levels
eventually lead them to be inactive, sick, and out of contact with
friends and colleagues.
Weight gain and obesity
Weight gain is a major concern in today’s world. Even young adults are facing it either because of genetic material or poor eating habits. When they are asked to control their weight they start skipping their meals without consulting any dietitian.
Mostly they skip breakfast and starve themselves. When after a few days of following this routine, they check their weight, the scale shows the opposite of what they thought.
Of course, it is supposed to lose weight after skipping
meals but the reality is different.
When we stay hungry for a long time, especially after sleep hours, our body behaves differently. It craves something sweet, enriched with sugars and they try to eat everything out of this craving. At the end of the day, when they calculate their calories, the total number of calories taken for lunch and dinner exceeds the normal range. Their BMI goes above the limit.
If you want to lose weight, try having smaller meals after a
while rather than skipping whole meals.
Higher risk of cancer
One factor associated with the development of cancer due to skipping breakfast is the habit of overeating throughout the day. A hungry person becomes more prone to hunger pangs and eats what comes their way.
The other factor that can be linked is the fact body is already starved of nutrients due to the overnight gap. When something healthy is not eaten in the morning, our body starts responding. When the body goes into weakness mode, steroids made in the body are released and this can indirectly cause inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is the main trigger for cancers
of different types.
Decreased rate of metabolism
Our morning breakfast deals with our activities and it activates our stomach and enzymes. Metabolism rules our bodies. Food digestion and the energy derived from those food ingredients are dependent on normal metabolic functions.
Breakfast acts as a key for opening up a lock of
metabolism that was slowed down due to rest.
People who eat their breakfast and take proper sleep, stay
healthy and young. Its credit goes to healthy organs and active metabolic systems.
Chronic headaches
If you follow the daily routine of a person complaining about headaches, particularly chronic migraine, you would get to know that, he skips meals for a long time. The simple reason for his headache is his low blood sugar level.
When our brain fails to get the required level of glucose,
it is forced to get into fight and flight mode and releases some
hormones.
Due to low blood sugar levels, blood pressure is also
increased. The whole scenario causes headaches and weakness in the body.
Alopecia and decreased growth
Hair loss has two main reasons.
- Genetic
- Nutritional
Genetic predisposition is quite uncomfortable but the
nutritional cause is manageable.
People with poor eating habits and skipping meals have higher rates of baldness than those who take their breakfast at regular times.
A moderate breakfast is supposed to have higher protein
content. When protein is taken in the early morning it acts like building
blocks for cells of skin, hair, and nails.
Keratin is the protein responsible for the growth of hair follicles. When we don’t take a proper amount of keratin it can hamper our hair growth and can result in a higher rate of hair loss.
This type of alopecia is diet dependent and you
should take a protein-enriched breakfast to prevent hair loss.

Increased hangover
This may seem unnecessary but a healthy breakfast with
important nutrients like iron, minerals, vitamin C, and B12 puts a positive
effect on the brain and helps the body to recover from hangovers
enabling him to regain energy and carry on regular activities.
If a hangover stays for a long time, it can cause health complications.
Take home message
Breakfast is the first meal we eat after having a period of
rest and most of the time this resting phase extends for up to 12 hours. If we
keep our body starved for more than 12 hours it causes it to be in
stress. That stress is unnecessary and preventable.
Candid dialogue
Skipping breakfast can lead to plenty of health
complications. They can be mild as headaches and complicated as cardiac
attack and Cancer.
Eating breakfast can be a fun time for food lovers and
health packages at the same time.
